Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a repair process by which hail damage and other minor dents can be removed by a highly skilled technician without disturbing the factory finish of a vehicle. It requires a specially designed set of tools that enable a technician to “message” a dent from the back side of any panel and eventually working the dented area back to its original position and thus removing the damage. Paintless dent repair does not require repainting which insurance companies truly appreciate.
Q: What is paintless dent repair?
Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a repair process by which hail damage and other minor dents can be removed by a highly skilled technician without disturbing the factory finish of a vehicle. It requires a specially designed set of tools that enable a technician to “message” a dent from the back side of any panel and eventually working the dented area back to its original position and thus removing the damage.
Is it the tools or the technician that make paintless dent repair successful?
It is both. Special tools allow a technician to gain access to the dent, which is a large part of the process but the ability of the technician accounts for most of the success. It takes an average of 2 years before a PDR trainee can repair a lightly hail damaged vehicle and 4-8 years before he can repair a heavily hail damaged vehicle flawlessly.
What severity of damage can be repaired?
Expert technicians can repair up to softball sized hail damage effectively, however, the number of those dents determines the cost effectiveness between repair and replacement of panels. Cars with hundreds of dime to quarter sized dents can be repaired with paintless dent repair at or below the typical body shop type repair costs without compromising the factory finish.
What advantages does paintless dent repair have over traditional auto body repair methods?
The number one reason our customers choose paintless dent repair is it retains their cars OEM finish. This means that the value of their car doesn’t diminish just because it has been damaged and repaired. Other advantages are quicker repair times, smaller rental car bills, and less disassembly.
What are the disadvantages to this repair?
The number one disadvantage is the occasional access hole that has to be put in a doorjamb or other area to gain access to a dent. Unfortunately, this technique has been abused by some paintless dent repair companies that try to decrease repair times and increase profits or simply do not have the necessary talent or experience to access areas other ways.
Can all panels of a vehicle be accessed and repaired?
With models changing yearly, this question cannot be answered with a simple “yes” truthfully by anyone in the business, but in the past Dent Care has encountered an estimated 1 hail dent out of every 50-100 cars that cannot be removed with paintless dent repair.
Will paintless dent repair damage the paint?
Trained correctly, a PDR technician can effectively remove applicable dents without paint damage. It is only when too sharp or too large of dent is attempted by an inexperienced technician when problems occur.
Will the dents come back?
No. Dent Ringer has given a lifetime guarantee on all repairs and has never encountered dents reappearing on any repaired vehicles.
Can moldings, cowlings, etc. be repaired with paintless dent repair?
This technique has been tried on moldings with less than adequate results and should be replaced if damaged. Cowlings such as on a F150 truck near the windshield have been repaired successfully a majority of the time. However, a cowling/trim attached to the hood of a town car needs to be replaced the majority of the time.
